We LOVE that our dancers have so much ambition to keep dancing, including attending dance summer schools! Low-Impact Jazzer, Helen, has just completed a week of Cuban dance at The Place, London!
“I had a great week at the Place doing a daily session with Miguel Altunaga (Dancer: Rambert, Hofesh Schecter; RB Commissioned Choreographer), who was accompanied by Bobby on a variety of instruments getting us all in the mood for our Cuban rhythms. Each session was 1.5 hours, and there were about 30 over-60s attending each day.
Miguel was simply wonderful and the whole week was a joy. We did an extensive warm-up lasting 40-50 minutes where we loosened up every part of our bodies, especially ribs, shoulders, hips and neck. This enabled us to do the Cuban moves across the floor, with a freedom that we don’t always move with. It was liberating and guided by Miguel with the fantastic South American rhythms that filled our beings, we were transported.
The Place offers a variety of classes for over 60’s and the summer intensives which I did are very popular. You can do it on a daily drop-in or sign up for the whole week. (This was £70, which is fantastic value). Classes are usually either ballet or contemporary. I would highly recommend giving it a go if you love to dance”
WELL DONE HELEN! I can’t wait to see your Cuban hips in jazz this week!
